December 1984 saw the arcade release of Spartan X, AKA Kung-Fu Master, one of the founding games of the beat'em up genre, designed by Takashi Nishiyama at Irem and adapted from a film starring Jackie Chan.

Fun fact: the team that later developed Super Mario Bros. worked on the Famicom version of Spartan X to get their hands on a side-scrolling game, while Akira Toriyama drew inspiration from this version for Dragon Ball's Red Ribbon arc, a manga that itself served as a source of inspiration for SMB.
