If it was safe to do so, I would, but I live in the deep south in a county that's over 90% red. They brag about never shutting down churches even during the worst part of covid. Why would I put my life at risk to build community with them? I have immune issues. They don't care if I live or die.

If you know people who are doing the work give them a box of granola bars to hand out at the protest. It connects people to the group, and you did that. I'm the snack lady, people call me up to see if I have something for them to give out this Saturday, they tell me the results. Makes me happy..

Yeah, on this basic principle I took a concealed carry and shooting class. From a semi-retired cop. It was emotionally extremely taxing. I learned that I might not be the kind of person who can be in those spaces, at least not at this time.

In ~Nov 2023 I heard an organizer say there really is no community building substitute better than being in a space together, reading a collective text (or doing a collective activity) and discussing it. Boom stronger relationships, stronger community. We really do not have to reinvent the wheel!!

Do something in your community, keep your head down & ears open. I went to pack boxes at the church food bank 2 blocks away. I don’t belong but they welcome all help. I went to lunch with a friend last week. We started out just catching up. Toward the end of the meal we acknowledged the chaos and exhaustion we were both feeling.

We hugged goodbye and I realized I really needed that hug with another person mourning the state of things.

During the pandemic, I realized I didn't even know my neighbors. Then I got two dachshund puppies and made several friends who really stepped up when I was diagnosed with cancer.

Most people disappeared when FB came out to sit in their homes and chat with people online.

I recall feeling this at the beginning of the Mama Bears for Liberty stuff a few years ago. I went to public school in a rural conservative community & knew my teachers. I saw them at church, Girl Scouts, or town events. They weren’t seen as dangerous agenda groomers. These ppl need to go outside.

His observation. They don't hang out together often because have no empathy. A a result they are so filled with anger that they are no joy to be around. Most liberal people will hear you out, let someone release their frustrations and do their best to find some common ground to help the situation.
