Unlike differences in other cognitive traits (e.g., Big Five personality traits), we have limited knowledge on how people differ in their object processing capacity and whether such abilities are fractionated or unitary. Faces however arguably have the greatest claim to domain specificity. 2/13

We reasoned that if object space contributes to human visual cognition, and the quadrants of object space are at least partially anatomically and functionally separable, this should have a measurable effect on people’s object discrimination abilities. 6/13

We focused on the stubby animate-looking face quadrant of object space for two reasons.
1. Faces arguably have the greatest claim to domain specificity – providing a strong test for the contribution of object space
2. There are considerable individual differences in face perception abilities
