Even if they still ate fries in the Trek future, the idea of "getting fries with that" is so tied to commerce and American fast food. You can have french fries with any meal you like when you're using a food replicator!

Ironically, while TNG was overall very good about not using contemporary catchphrases, it was in one of the best-ever episodes ("Measure of a Man") where they slipped up a bit and someone referred to Data as "a toaster."
Little stuff like this, I can sorta forgive, esp. because you'd figure educated Starfleet officers might have heard about old tech like toasters anyway. (I know what a Victrola was!) It's just RELENTLESS in SECTION 31. They WEREN'T careful like TNG writers were.
I think TNG writers, even those that weren't uber Trek fans, were unavoidably famliarized with Trek enough to know what sounded "right." With "Discovery" & "Picard", I don't think the writers had the vibe AT ALL. I know fans loved the final season of "Picard", but even that was pretty wonky.
Agreed, I thought "Picard" S3 was an improvement, but S2 had me almost giving up on TREK. The vibes were just way way off. I think SECTION 31 is even a step in an even MORE dispiriting direction. It's all fights! Could be any random sci-fi franchise.
In the first 5 minutes of Episode 1 of "Picard", one character tells another, this is verbatim, "Dude, I'm a fellow in artificial intelligence and quantum consciousness." I knew I was in for a rough ride at that point. I knew whoever was writing this had not seen more than a handful of TNG episodes.
Wrath of Khan, controversially, is weird and fun. Kirk having a bunch of stuff from his past bubble up, an angry guy from 1997 quotes Moby Dick, Kirk does something clever - good times.
But also it's so weird. Genesis, brain bugs, the Spock mindmeld thing.

Undiscovered Country? Fun and weird.
First Contact? Fun, not too weird.
Insurrection? Weird, but not fun.
I need a problem that's weird and they have fun along the way.
A message about friendship and being clever.
