Been chewing on that Vince Gilligan thing about sexy villains for a couple weeks now, coz I think it’s complicated, but FWIW here are a few thoughts:
First of all, Walter White. I only watched the first two seasons of BB, so my judgment can only be partial, but I never saw him as a villain.

To some extent that's true of all these anti-hero things, but for me "what if you were a serial killer, but, y'know, nice." was a step too far. I never bought the basic premise.

S2 already felt like South Park’s Mr Mackey had showed up to the Writer’s Room - “Drugs are bad, kids, m’kay.” I can only imagine this tonal shift came to stay.)

For me, this didn't make him a villain per se, any more than his killing of Krazy-8.
