Imagine thinking about being the first player to come out while playing in the top flight (possibly of any league globally, definitely England) and your captain says due to his beliefs he can’t wear the the band. And he is backed by some.

And as Jordan pointed out, the actual wording of what the rainbow laces campaign asks players to sign up to is incredibly tame - so if you can't even agree to THAT, it's pretty tricky to find explanations beyond bigotry.
Its just so pathetic watching people argue that homophobes are entitled to their opinions because of their religion. Very clearly you can be a devout christian and believe its not sinful or unchristian to be gay. There's plenty of devout gay christians. Its just excusing homophobia.
It’s a cliche I am sure but people have no problem wearing mixed fibre clothing, and pick and choose what they want to consider a clash with their religion.
I also just know plenty of gay christians and muslims who think their god has no problem with their queerness and loves them all the same. Its just fundamentally disrespectful of religion to believe its fundamentally homophobic and transphobic.
