This is why I was requesting good history writers for kids books, specifically for American history. My kids go to public school in Texas, but I will do what I can to give them a well-rounded, truthful history.

My ‘specialism’ is early medieval so I’m not au fait with modern texts focussing on US history. And even less for children, irrespective of age. Dorling Kindersley’s America’s Century is a dip-in encyclopaedia of the 20th C. Alistair Cooke’s America is old (1972!) but spans more of US History…

The librarians know what’s up! The Coretta Scott King and Pura Belpré award lists focus on Black and Latine authors respectively—some are contemporary but there are a number of historical titles mixed in. For Asian authors, the APAAL awards https://www.apalaweb.org/awards/literature-awards/.

This one's not written for kids or young teens, but they'll probably enjoy it, as it reads like a spy thriller, even though it's all true.

TORPEDO JUNCTION by Homer Hickam - about the German U-boats that stalked the US East Coast in WWII.

His memoir ROCKET BOYS was turned into the film OCTOBER SKY

Not a US historian, so feel free to disregard this, but I discovered Teri Kanefield a few years ago, and can recommend her series of biographies (The Making of America). Her recent book, A Firehose of Falsehood, isn't strictly US history but it's got a lot to say about it!
