During the Autistic Ramadan webinar with Dr Sofia, Sofia from SEMA said “I can go without food no problem; it’s the sleep disruption that KILLS me!!!”. Having discussions with other Autistic Muslims, she found that she isn’t alone.

Additionally, broken sleep will
- make us more sensitive to our sensory environments
- reduce our ability to mask (and so appear ‘more autistic’)
- hard to keep our balance,
- difficulty with our dexterity
- increase our executive dysfunction.
💭 The pressure to fast shouldn’t come at the cost of health. The Muslim community needs to shift away from judgement and expectation, especially for young Autistic people who are just entering this phase of their faith. Ramadan is meant to bring ease, not harm.

It’s a time when we should look to amend the demands placed on us at home, at work, at school/ further education.
