Actually there is a danger that these satellites crashing into the earth's atmosphere could upset the ionosphere and ozone levels creating potential for the destabilization of the ozone level.
Once their operational period comes to an end, they are decommissioned and allowed to fall back on Earth. This mechanism has been designed to prevent space debris from accumulating. This is so far seen as a responsible approach to space sustainability.
And what do these decommissioned satellites hit when they return to earth? Or do they burn up 100% and pose no risk to anything or anyone on the ground?
They're small satellites on a trajectory that has them completely burn up. They do release harmful chemicals in the upper atmosphere. While it's far from an ideal situation, this is the best the technology can do right now.
They're in such low orbit (for low latency & high speed internet) that they will return to earth eventually. You have to choose the lesser of the 3 evils. No global internet, space debris (that will return eventually anyway), or steer them on a collision coarse with the atmosphere.
It does seem wasteful and harmful in the long term. They only last a few years and then poof. Hopefully the technology improves, becomes less wasteful, and less harmful in the future.
Apparently a feature not a bug, and a wasteful one at that.
Star-link launch 1.5-2k satellites p/yr for expansion and replenishment, de-orbiting 200-300 for malfunctions/upgrades/orbital decay; weighing 1,250 kg (2,756 lbs)approx 2 tonnes. Now there’s your waste.

I just had a two day interaction with Verizon the other day. Straight up question to them: are you going to be using Starlink satellites? Not only was the answer yes, but I was told that all cellular services will be using Starlink satellites. So if this dumbass gets a hard on against us,
Not very surprising since they put them at such low altitude. Low altitude=more atmospheric resistance =more slowing and falling. Musk is really good at littering space junk all over the planet.
Yes he is. The dumbass even shot a Tesla with a mannequin dressed in his likeness into space. I worked at a far superior satellite company at the time and we were laughing hysterically and pissed as we watched the launch. Space debris is a real problem.
Background: the burn ups are planned retirements of their first generation of satellite. Not that it makes it better with the ozone depleting chemicals and heavy metals.
Seems like a really dumb plan, doesn’t it? When you realize that people go to jail for firing a handgun into the air because they bullet could come down anywhere and injure anyone… This doesn’t seem like it was well planned out. I’m not surprised.
He's Launched about 8000 or so Satellites for Starlink in total. That increases weekly, as older satellites continuously expire from cosmic rays, age, planned upgrades, lack of fuel, etc.
The Falcon 9 uses filthy kerosene propellant. The Carbon Footprint maintaining this network is MASSIVE.
High Power Radio Frequency used by the Satellites has been recently studied / linked with reducing global reflective cloud formation, significantly increasing the amount of solar energy reaching the surface.
I would attribute that more to the vast amounts of metal oxides being released into the stratosphere every time one of these things burns up, rather than the RF emissions.
There's simply not enough energy being radiated to cause those kinds of atmospheric effects..
Just look at HAARP in Gakona, Alaska. That array emits up to 3.6 megawatts into the stratosphere, with the specific intent of studying artificially-induced atmospheric heating, and it can't even modulate cloud or weather patterns 😄
Your typical Starlink satellite emits about 10-30 watts
Right. The issue was why albedo not increasing with additional particles (carbon, aluminum oxide, cadmium, etc) from more sat’s atmospheric re-rentry. Rate has become inverted now.
The lack of h20 nucleation from high energy satellite output, was posited for preventing initial cloud formation.
I am sincerely interested in a citation of that study, as I'm interested in the potential environmental impacts of transmissions in the Ku, Ka, and particularly the E-Band.
Any help would be appreciated!
Climatologists I followed on Twitter, discussed decreased albedo from potential high energy satellite constellations: disruption of water molecules nucleating into larger drops for cloud formation.

Does the U.S. not have a Starlink? WHY are we always counting on Musks' Starlink? A Starlink that has shut down over Ukraine. Send a US Starlink over Ukraine. Send Intelligence to Ukraine. Send weapons to Ukraine.
Read an article where the elements they use will burn holes in ozone. If it was like 1 a month it probably won't do much harm but if China and everyone does this. And like a thousands a month are hitting ozone. In this time like the old humans in power want us to all die with them All 6 billion.
Problem is, most people aren't aware of the facts in this video, myself included. Thank you for posting it. I shared on Facebook, but again, I doubt many will take the time to listen to the whole video. American's have short attention spans & I am guilty of this at times too. This was informative!
He got Elon the first approval in 2020. Is this why Elon donated so much to get another contract for this piece of shit? It is inferior and pollutes space. waste of money. Excellent explanation. @warren.senate.gov.bsky.social

Here's a thought. Elonia seems to think that he and his team of Junior Computer Cadets are the only ones capable of nefarious deeds. Lots of programming wizards out there are capable of doing things to Starlink. I'm sure a few were fairly recently gainfully employed by the Federal government.
So glad a few years ago, before I knew Elon was crazy, I picked a different internet provider. Almost went with Starlink as it was one of the few in my rural area.
Glad I picked a different provider so I'm not supporting a crazy druggie
Just read that these pieces of shit satellites have a 5-year lifespan and that they're at the end of life. So this was expected by Leon, but not something that was shared with the general public. Once again. Some more.

It's called progress.

we have a very active stellar environment which changes the shape of our atmosphere which can nudge LEO sat's out of their orbit
