NICE recommends
*early identification of people in last part of life (or likely to be)
*parallel care (adds pall care to current treatments)
*planning ahead for EoL care
*access to a care coordinator
*access to 24/7 care/expertise & advice
NCEPOD finds gaps in all areas.

If the healthcare system is not currently meeting national guidelines for our sickest & most vulnerable citizens, we are looking at a whole system failure in end of life care, from failing to commission sufficient services to inability to deliver by exhausted staff.
The price?

The price is paid by sick people & their families.
Symptom burden.
Preventable suffering.
Carer fatigue.
Emotional distress.
Anxiety about waiting for help.

The UK had the best palliative & EoL care in the world.

As it crumbles, Parliament is discussing assisted dying.

I am not campaigning for or against assisted dying, but it is clear to me (& NCEPOD) that the Human Right to living without preventable suffering is not being met here, & the answer is to prevent what suffering is preventable before we change the law.
We can do better.

Whatever your opinion about AD, experience around the world shows that few people choose it in the end.
However, everyone/anyone is likely to require access to care, expert symptom management, advice & support.
The NHS must support everyone's right to those basics.

My asking that people be denied the right to access assisted dying if they choose until palliative care exists in a utopian state you're defacto campaigning against it.
