tbh in a speculative biology way sirens make more sense to me, since mimicry does exist in the wild, though i don't think they would be functional aside from mimicking a human woman in shape

I liked this train of thought, with it varying with the other half, never would have thought about it! But where I diverge is, that in my head, it would make more sense the XXL in the mammals, specially bcs in mammals boobs are functional 🤔 also, I think that underwater there would be a lil bouyancy

Yeah but think about it. WHY would the mermaids need good aerodynamics ? They're not pursuit hunters. They don't need to be fast to catch their prey. They just need to be alluring to seamen - and once they get their hand on one, once again they don't have to be fast : just strong 1/

I think it depends on the kind of “mermaid”

If they have the tail of say a whale, they’d have boobs/milk. Whales are mammals.

If they have the tail of a fish, then no boobs. Maybe interesting scale patterns in that area but that’s it

Siren refers specifically to greek mythology and initially were depicted as bird-human hybrids, shifting later towards becoming synonymous with mermaids in a lot of contexts.

Western depictions of both were influenced by each other.
But Sirens were specifically used as evil creatures.

Bcs I had contact with stuff in english early on life, I did kinda know the difference, but it bugs me out to try and think of a equivalent for siren. Actually, here we call them both as 'sereia' so I automatically see the siren as the deadly&alluring 🤔

It's originally the voices of Sirens that call to sailors, they also carried musical instruments - there are depictions of male Siren (bearded heads, bird bodies) too!

Why birds? Maybe because if you spot birds from sea you'll think you're approaching shore & safety. Not really supposed to be sexy.

Curiously, Sirens do come ashore, there's tombs/shrines to them (particularly Parthenope in Naples, Virgil says he was nurtured there) and a famous grouping of statues "Orpheus and the Sirens" which may be Orpheus, or simply a poet.

Sirens weren't a danger to men alone, according to Lycophron & Ptolemy Hephaestion centaurs fleeing from Herakles were killed by sirens.

While not sure of the origin, another story of Parthenope makes the centaur Vesuvius her lover, Jupiter didn't approve and turned him into the volcano.

They would produce their own mana by feeding on magical begins which roam the sea. Sirens eating humans is uncommon but not unheard but it's more like fast food to them since it dosen't do anything.

Me and my friend call them "Song Organs" in our lore.

OMG HAHAHAHA I swear, that was the first time in my life I had to think of HOW even are whale breasts. I mean, do they even have breasts?? But the milk part I think it would made sense if, as someone commented, the fish part would be of another mammal maybe? 🤔
