Ok. Makes sense. But now we know Zuck is going full fascist, and frankly the platform had been skewing hard right for a long time. Why hasn't anyone made an alternative recently? What is the startup cost?

No idea! I’m a design nerd not a VC, unfortunately, so cost isn’t my area. Related, I’m in my last days on fb, actively advocating for ppl to delete, leave and come here. Let me tell you, even among informed, educated, diehard liberals, it’s damn hard sell. Habit is a powerful force.
Meta has 72,000 employees and massive infrastructure. Probably the thing keeping a lot of people there (despite Zuckerberg) is how easy it is to upload photos, and maintain contacts. That type of capacity would be expensive to replicate, and it would be difficult to get people to move.
I'm off threads for good and cut way back on IG and FB.
I stay at all for businesses/artists on IG, marketplace on FB, and group's on FB.
Obviously social media needs make revisions and laws but it's really unfortunate we allowed meta to buy IG.
I read a good LinkedIn post last week (can't find link) with a lawyer who quit representing Meta over Zuckerberg's announcement. His decision was to stay on FB but not buy anything from their advertisers. That last part should be a thing. "I'm just here for the free beer" and such.
