I found this German helmet on the Somme in the early 1980s when I was 17. It was lying at the bottom of a mine crater at Carnoy, in the former no man’s land, where a farmer must have flung it after his plough dragged it up. The craters are long-since filled in. - ThreadSky

Gone forever. When I went back a year or two later, I found a French sniper plate riddled with bullet holes lying at the edge of that field.

I had a couple of battlefield pick ups from 1980. A german helmet and a French Label rifle from La Pompelle. Both subsequently donated to museums.

It's tough if you just see it rotting though, but agree. I gave all my finds away. The only find I kept was a gift from one of my students who found this in Albania in 1994. I have exact location and will doubtless gift it to an Albanian museum in due course.
