I wonder why that’s needed and if Switch emulation made them change up the hardware design at all (guessing maybe the graphics chip is pretty different or something..?)

From what the developer interview says it sounds like they prioritised the power of the hardware first in the design, which made compatibility harder to pull off as the hardware is quite different. It also seems like this rendered previous methods of compatibility the Wii U/3DS used impossible.
