Agree w this take. I've spent so much time and energy trying to get various visas for team members who went to college in America and want to just keep living here and paying taxes. It would be so much better for everyone if we could just pay $ for the ppl who are worth it. - ThreadSky

I don't think we should sell it. If you're a foreign national who graduated from a US college, we already invested a ton in you. We have every reason to try to keeping you and your human capital here. Every graduate should get a green card, imo.

That makes sense to me. I would rather pay $ than go through the H1-B or O-1 process though. And for talented people who didn’t go to college — we work w some — it would be nice to have a predictable path to be able to help them get here if we know they’ll contribute a lot.

I guess there is some risk of abuse by for profit diploma mills. But it seems net better to try to solve that than to lose all these super productive people that are already invested in America.

H1-B scarcity is a pretty new thing though, I think? Presumably if we are relieving demand on the order of magnitude of the international college student population, it could go back to being rigorous but not impractical...

I would worry that companies force these employees into indentured servitude-like agreements to ensure they recoup the cost before the person could change employers.

That’s a good point. I think the current system already has that to a degree( people on H1B’s afraid to change jobs). You might be able to just disallow that (sort of like how CA disallows non competes) or at least cap it at one year or something.
