Speaking as someone whom the 🇬🇧 Office of National Statistics describes as 'economically inactive' despite somehow getting through spending all my pension on this and that, it is not only blue birds that suffer from this absurd requirement.
automation funded universal basic income would pay you to relax sometimes without guilt. ubi can be funded with billionaire money taken beyond the billion dollar mark.
“When life follows the rule of stimulus–response, need–satisfaction and goal–action, it atrophies into pure survival: naked biological life. If we lose the ability to be inactive, we begin to resemble machines that must simply function.” - Byung Chul Han, Vita Contrmplativa
I have a similar but different problem where I really want to be productive but can't afford to. I'd love to spend all day every day drawing but it doesn't pay the bills so I can't do it. I kind of envy people who have thriving patreons and can devote themselves to what they're good at.
Being "productive" means generating capital for rich people while only getting a sliver of it. Right now, other than work, I hang with my cats and play video games. At 39 years old
I hate capitalism, so being "lazy" and "unproductive" is a great thing
Yeah, it took a while haha. I've been poor my whole life so it was easy to not spend money cuz I never had any
Now that I have a little bit, it's still easy not to spend it and I've managed to escape the usual "your life is fucked now" events that happened every few years
Something I needed to see, as I spend almost a full week on bedrest, coughing my lungs out atm. My house is a mess, I'm behind on work but I've got 0 energy for stuff; yet I still feel guilty about it. So thank you for the comic <3
I'm in LTC. I come from a family where every woman is either a teacher or nurse. We call it 'the caregiver gene.' Only myself and my aunt are exceptions, because we're disabled.
I feel zero guilt being cared for. I view it as fulfilling a need. Some need to care for others. Some need care. Win-win
When a low income worker does nothing, it’s seen as lazy and that they should be working harder. When a rich person does nothing, it’s seen as a luxury and entitled to relax and rejuvenate.
You’re not lazy, you’re just psychologically and financially being oppressed to even try to enjoy life
I keep life simple. My dog is very unproductive and does not help with any house chores. However, he is worth all the love, kindness, and treats I have. I think society is weird.
Or to put it another way ... Why make money for overeducated morons who know quite a bit less than you do ?
Not long ago, I worked for myself - 16 hrs a day, 7 days a week, for the best part of a year ... and didn't make a penny. I guess it's a little perverse of me to be proud of it. But I am.
Me personally, I’ll only feel good about being lazy for a little while IF I’ve done a whole bunch of work beforehand. If I know I’ve got stuff to do and I haven’t been doing it? That’s wraps.
Society in the English-speaking West, yes. There's a body of historical and sociological research going back to Max Weber, showing that productivity is equated with worth. The historical roots are in protestantism where it was seen as a way to worship God.
I lost someone important last week. Ive been laying in bed since. ive stopped crying as often and feel "ok" someone wanted me to get up and do something on the computer.
I got up and instantly decided i wanted revenge on the universe but id let them wait for it. I went back to bed its safer for all
If you don't get off the hamster wheel, you'll eventually turn into a hamster. Human's need to stop senselessly chasing their tail all the time and think, or not think. Just stop, and be. Remember who they are.
Being a lazy asshole makes you a liability. I don’t appreciate going to work 5 days a week to support some lazy fuck who doesn’t want to play a part in society and not work. I work with the young’s who can barely work a full week. They get replaced as they aren’t worth dealing with.
You're dealing with people who aren't even aware that they've internalized social expectations and are somehow using sanctimonious "hear, hear" exclamations as counter-narratives.
It's not about turning you into a commodity but about the sense of accomplishment for a day. I don't work seven days a week, but even when I am off, I usually get stuff done, like cleaning my room, doing laundry, and so on. Sitting around doing nothing but laze is not very enticing.
Thank you. I needed to hear this permission. I’d like the vague guilt feelings to stop interrupting my natural flow.
Why are people so appalled when a retired person sleeps past 7am? There is no right side to see a sunrise from.
It'll be okay Economic Unit 4,740,334,126 just sit right there and relax and we'll send the recycling team to come and turn you and those radical ideas of yours in to some jolly productive chemicals and minerals for the agriculture-zone :-)
that was precisely it. I was tongue in cheek.
But logically we are going to have a big problem. Very soon there will be a lot less jobs, and people need money to eat, not freeze, ect. Corporations are going to make shit without humans and get all the profit. But who can spend the money?
You know I like to lay in bed
And sleep out in the sun
Reading books and playing crazy music
Just for fun
You know it makes feel so fine
And sets my mind at ease to
Know that I don't harm a soul
In doing what I please

I'm proof positive my mother actually thought this way, though she was smart enough never to overtly say so.

Internalized capitalism is a *bitch* to get rid of, though I'm getting better. 😺

have long been Devouring the World, Enslaving Our People, Wasting Precious Energy, & Choking Our Ecology.
But the World isn't Disposable.
We need to break through to the future,
before we become an untold history.

In any case, with AI coming, many of us will simply just have to enjoy life since there won't be any work.
But logically we are going to have a big problem. Very soon there will be a lot less jobs, and people need money to eat, not freeze, ect. Corporations are going to make shit without humans and get all the profit. But who can spend the money?

Older folk are often dismissed because we are no longer productive regardless of previous experience knowledge and time to explain
