listen fam, "unrelatable" is bullshit. a character's specificity is not a weak point. it makes them seem a lot more like a person that's fleshed out and exists in a living, breathing world. it's better to let someone, somewhere feel seen by your OC than it is to make something bland and marketable

Talent is less important than practice and drive. The hardest part is being okay with making stuff that you feel stinks. But if you love doing it, and don’t worry too much about the results, you’ll be surprised at your own ability!

I appreciate the encouragement but I couldn't disagree more with the practice comment. Practice is only useful once you understand the basics and you have to get that from somewhere. Whether you take a class or self study it has to be something otherwise the practice does you no good

My point was that even if you feel lacking in talent, you can close that gap with dedicated practice. There are a lot of exceptionally talented artists out there who lack the discipline to see their projects through. But even discipline gets easier with practice!

Practice without guidance is certainly inefficient if you have a certain goal in mind, but is can still be useful because it feeds drive. It is not uncommon to hear of artists who wish they could draw like a child again— without fear of rules or the judgment of others.

The attachment to our own OCs is so real, man. 😭 Our brains are hardwired to form social connections wherever we can find them or make them up, so spend enough time with a character and they start feeling like an old friend.
