The old Conan cartoon is a plot hook goldmine:

A grumpy familiar that only wants to sleep and transforms into the decoration on a shield. Knowledgeable but resists growing up.

A long dead mage who can't take corporeal form. Bound to his tomb but offers sage advice in exchange for good deeds.
