We've never been in a great place in the west, and when I was growing up, particularly post 9/11, we caught a lot of strays because a lot of white people can't tell the difference between us and our middle eastern cousins. Less often was it directly at us, but no less impactful or damaging
Things somewhat cooled out in the 2010's (at least by comparison), but lately it's so much worse than it's ever been in my lifetime. If you were to believe the comment section of any tiktok about or by desis, you'd think that we all smelled horrendous and that all of south asia is covered in shit
It extends beyond just mean comments online as well, because every few days, I see news articles of desi people murdered in the west by racists, with very little public outcry despite how staggering the frequency is
The lack of media attention isn't surprising either, because despite being the most populous racial group on the planet, we just don't get western media attention the way other groups do (that itself is a whole other topic that deserves much more detail another time)
Worse yet, when I've seen people try to bring attention to the murders, the replies are often just as racist, and while I know online comments are not a representation of the whole, it -is- a sign that things are worsening for us
Gen Z in particular, with their shift towards conservatism and generally poor literacy/media comprehension (a fabulous combo), are especially bold with this, spouting more hateful shit than I've ever received from older generations
