This company had severe vulnerability in their application, like the kind where you can bypass login/password. This intern kept leaving funny comments in the code, while looking at the code. And when he left a comment on this particular part - he noticed it didn't look right. 1/2

And he was correct, this part had a serious security bug. So he fixed it, and left a funny comment when submitting the fix. And then the boss saw that comment in the report. And the senior engineer thanked the intern, also with a funny comment. 2/2

No kidding. I have been in some environments that are actively hostile to code comments. Lines like "if you have to comment it, it has a smell"

The code (no matter how readable) can only tell you what the code does. Only a comment can tell you why.

(Unfortunately far too many comments tell you what the code does which is not helpful)

All this means is that a smart intern was genuinely reviewing the code and because he has a sense of humor/gets easily bored he was also amusing himself by leaving funny comments as he worked. He didn't "find the bug by shitposting"; he was shitposting while discovering a serious bug. Definite hire.

It being a story on Reddit, I think it's safe to assume that elements of this story have been "enhanced" to make it more juicy. Also if true, their code review processes are terrible. Code comments and commit messages need to be informative and easy to read. No exceptions.
