The heavily right wing media have had a huge role to play in managing the messages here and fuelling that disappointment.

If Labour can't manage that within a pretty tight timeframe, people will respond instinctively by lowering their expectations (the Gap of Disappointment is what really *burns*).
Once they have low expectations of Labour, it will be MUCH harder to win their trust again. Seriously tough.

Well, they have... but it was always going to be that way. Bias in British media is a known-known.
So Labour have to account for it and comport themselves accordingly. Which they're not.
