It also speaks to privilege and power in our society. No one would doubt that blue-bloods get more from the system as it currently stands. That is unless you are a blue-blood, in which you think everyone is just jealous of you and you “deserve” your privilege because you works for it.
And I know we joke all the time about the refs getting 💰, but it is actually more nefarious. It would make sense that if someone is bribing you, then you do what they want. But refs THINK they are upholding fair play and the rules, but they are just as susceptible to the biases in the system.
It’s reasonable to say overcome 3-4 calls. It’s hard to overcome an entire 10 minutes of calls that result in a deficit of 2 to 19 free throws. When the score differential IS that difference.
I also this a lot in education. Do I have students that perform better than others? Of course. But when we look into why, far too often it is due to factors like parents’ wealth and privilege that often go back generations.
And going back to basketball, people make excuses for things like the free throw discrepancy saying Duke is just better. If they are actually better, then they won’t need the advantages and their superior skills will shine through. But far too often, that is not what we see.
