answering as a former teacher: kids feel so little control in their own lives - in the moments that they say hurtful things they’re trying to exert influence + pass on the feeling of helplessness - you’re the immediate target for their frustration, but it’s not personal ❤️

thank you for this answer and this helps a lot she is only 6 so I control a lot of her but I try to let her make decisions on appropriate things.

she’s 6 so I did take her iPad and let her know that what she said hurt Mommy. she did come back and apologize later for hurting my feelings.

My friend daughter said something to her today that hurt her feelings, I hear it. So, I called her out on it in a sarcastic way. Saying “now you just hurt your mom’s feelings, I know you meant it in another way, but it still hurt her”. She said sorry and gave her mom a hug after. We cheered !

Kids are such jerks. I remind myself a lot that they're little dudes who don't know anything, they have no perspective. If I get super upset I check in with myself. have i eaten? have i drank enough water? am i taking care of myself? Then i bitch to their dad about it lol
