My take on Sonic 2 has p much always been "the games real fun minus Oil Ocean zone, Metropolis and Sky Chase Zone" so there's Ur belief being challenged to a degree lmao
sonic 2 is alright but the special stages are awful on genesis, the way of accessing them is frustrating and annoying, the level design isnt anything crazy (mostly being hold right and win without that many secrets along the way) and falls off a cliff at around oil ocean, -
metropolis zone is abhorrently designed and sky chase is a bore, the air fleet level i forgot the name of is also nothing crazy, and death egg zone is a cruel finale, no room for error, if you die you have to refight a stupidly easy yet annoying boss, run out of lives and you start all over
those are my biggest issues with it, the music and presentation are obviously great and the things it brought to the series are amazing, but the thing that's keeping me from coming back to it is ultimately the level design being quite bland
still an alright game though and i get why its liked!!
*until you get to the final area which sends you back to the beginning if you die and you only get one ring and it made me so mad i stopped playing LOL
I... actually don't really like Sonic 2. Aside from Chemical Plant and Mystic Cave, the soundtrack doesn't really do anything for me. Hell, I find Metropolis Zone to be *grating.* And the movement never really felt 'right' until S3&K.
I wonder if it's just nostalgia, or if I'm missing something.

In the next 20 years there will be a CEO who mimics O'Hare to a T. Mark my fucking words
The last few zones don’t feel like they respect the design principles of the first two thirds of the game
still an alright game though and i get why its liked!!
