the thing that's funny to me about the idea of "banjo is better than mario 64 because mario kicks you out of the level after every star" is that like...the reason for that difference is that they're entirely different subgenres

Is this a common opinion? Growing up I always heard Mario 64 was the best n64 game and I played kazooie last year and it's great but Mario 64 is better by a landslide
Mario 64's physics and gameplay haven't aged nearly as well as Banjo's. Mario 64 aside from the first few levels, they kinda suck, especially the later ones. Also I'm not the only one who thinks Banjo is better than Super Mario 64. There are lots of other people online who think the same.
mario is an obstacle course platformer, so it kicks you out because the next obstacle course needs a different setup for the world, while banjo is an exploration game where the platforming is a smaller part, so yeah it doesn't kick you out because it's about the exploration
similarly like "mario 64 is better because the movement is more fun" well yeah mario's moveset is about expressive platforming and banjo's movement is just about getting you to new places, not about making the movement "fun," because the different subgenres have different focuses
