It is clear that sheep numbers in agri-environment agreements have been consistently maintained at the high end of allowable ranges. This has led to overgrazing on the peripheral heaths. A problem that continues to halt recovery.

It is also clear that, despite agreements, cattle have not been maintained in sufficient numbers in summer to help control the spread of Molinia in and around the central blanket bogs.

Thanks for posting. Spent a lot of time in the early 80s there. My experience of NE is limited to Thorne Moors between Doncaster and the Humber. From that, the organisation seems to be top heavy with managers who have little to no experience of conservation and are more make political than sensible
