I am terrible at networking but I met a lot of people the one time I went to GDC. didn’t get any work out of it but I also didn’t try to, but I’d think it could only help.

It's great for networking, but no, I wouldn't bank that much money on job opportunities. Especially if you don't already have some potentially promising meetings planned or lined up.

If there are folks there that you really need/want to meet, maybe, but otherwise I would say not for that price.

All that being said, I'm sure I could talk to my wife about you staying with us, but we're not particularly close. It's either a 2hr drive, or a one hour drive to the BART station, then another 45 minute ride into SF.

You'd probably find other folks closer!

It def helps to meet a lot of people in the industry. At least as an immigrant it helped get my face out there to people that only knew me as my twitter icon. It probably won't help in getting an immediate job, but you def don't need the gdc ticket. You can schedule lunches or meetings in the garden

Tough call. I think GDC is kinder to marketing types than other fields. But like all job leads, it's a lot of luck and right place, right time. If you do attend, make a solid agenda of networking parties after hours. Winging it won't get you far. But no one can blame you for saving $ these days.

As a freelancer I would say there is always a chance that you can make one or two of those solid connections that lead to paid opportunities down the road but it's almost purely luck and not a 'right now' kind of return on investment.

I always feel a little safer staying as close to my desk as possible when money is tight. If you are not getting paid to go or cover some aspect of it already then it's probably not worth it once you factor in food and uber/cab. My favorite show though for sure. However...

If you are already decently connected and have folks you can roll with that help introduce you to other people you don't know yet than I think your chances probably improve a bit.

I personally did not find a job opportunity from GDC, but it comes with the territory of being in narrative design. Highly competitive, scarce jobs, etc.
What has helped me more is going to local events--in the East Coast, open houses from studios go a long way. Also other conferences + IRL events

I second this. This year will be my 2nd time going and I mask everywhere even outside, people usually raw dog after traveling and it's not a good idea. Only time I get my mask off is when eating. I also use Covixyl everyday to protect my wife & myself a bit more

It’s not just me and Joe that are immunocompromised, it’s our cats too. We’ve started disinfecting our shoes too. It’s really strict in our house, but that strictness has kept all of us alive and safe for many years.
