So I did a buuuncha more text stuff today. Maybe boring but... necessary. I prettied up the breaking too! There's lots of new opcodes like [fast] or [slow] and a few short escape codes for managing colours like &R; for red etc. What else do I need?... Back to real gameplay soon??? This looks incredible, Mack! Not only is the next text functionality top tier, I would love to know how you went about the object breaking logic. Love the way the signs break apart and the pieces bounce around and have shadows!!

Thanks so much!! I try to build little reusable systems over time and reuse them. One of them instances sounds, the other fx (explosions, dust, hits), and finally another for particles. The particles one started out as a big Node2D with a custom _draw where I ran a tiny particle simulation!

I still use _draw to display the particles but now I use more nodes to make neater code. The secret is the shadow is the real position of the Node! When the particle is in the air the z is simulated and the draw_texture call is offset by y -= z. Surprisingly the effect is very convincing.

The object breaking is similarly reusable, every entity has components for the features they want to use and the scripts can hook into what they'd like. A hitbox component deals with all the horrible collision stuff and emits events that are pretty much just hit() signals. Enough of those and 💥!

This is absolutely stellar work! I am also a big believer in the component paradigm that Godot makes so easy to embrace. So if I am understanding correctly, your particle system is a series of components that you apply to a parent particle node?

Oh yeah -- the red line doodad? that's a debug pen marker to help me figure out when to scroll the text down. I kinda like it though so I've not turned it off yet. Maybe I can make it prettier and keep it?
