Today would've been Matthew Shepard's 48th Birthday. While we remember those we lost to AIDS, let's not forget those we lost to hate. #RememberMatthew #NOH8

I'll never forget hearing this story at the time (as a str8 kid in WA state) - or hearing a local in Wyoming try to explain it away decades later.
Seeing the world as it truly is can be terrifying.
I will never EVER forget what happened to Matthew. Nor, will I forget my two baby cousins who died of Aids at age 26 and 27. John’s mother made a quilt for him, with his favorite teddy,David Bowie and dancing shoes. They are still accepting Quilts and I still have time to make one for Michael. ❤️2All
I am just a year older than him. And I remember his death vividly; it was a brutal, defining moment in the American LGBTQ+ struggle. We protested the institutionalized hate and national laws that otherized us, creating conditions for his murder. And we have come so far.
Just deleted X or twitter. The hate mongers on this same post are horrible. FOX must be spreading lies about a drug deal instead of the respect Matthew deserves.
The violence against Matthew was my first awareness that someone not straight would be hated simply for that fact. My kids were young; now we know that two are bi and one is trans, and my heart aches for Matthew and his parents in ways I couldn't imagine then. Thanks for remembering Matthew.

His parents remain in my heart
This kind of hatred… This kind of hatred…
Seeing the world as it truly is can be terrifying.
We must never go back.
I just mentioned him last night without knowing.
May he rest in peace.
