I think it had a bump in popularity in 2020 adjacent to e-girl/e-boy sub-cultures appearing. Not sure if it's still going or not. The internet is a vast sea of everything and anything that exists so it may be a bubble thing.
it's not mainstream (thank fucking GOD-), but its pretty popular i think within the general alt community, at least more than it was back in the 2000-10s.
i think the emo tiktok revival just kinda accidentally made "emo" a stand-in for "generically alt" to most normies. like how "goth" is too😭
i feel like there's been a resurgence since 2020 with a combo of teenagers getting into it and OGs reminiscing or just sharing that it wasn't a phase for them
No ik, I'm having the same question lol. From my observations, it isn't actually mainstream in any way it just became a bit more well known. Which basically means that a few more people are dressing that way, a lot more are trying to water it down, and a big majority is making fun of it
