This should be released for free as open data.

The Ordnance Survey map app is currently half price – £17.50 for a full year, giving you access to every map, at every level of detail, plus nifty route planning tools. You can also download maps to use offline. Way better for walking than Google Maps.

I've downloaded the data and written my own app to draw contours which I intend to use for an art project.

Some subset of the data. I don't know how much has changed but the early releases were things like gazetteers accurate to the nearest grid square? Contours are probably something that someone could trace from out of copyright OS Maps so would have been difficult to monetise anyway.

I have a grudge against the OS ever since reporting to them that a path marked on a map would take a walker over a dangerous rockfall and another path had been established on the ground as a safe descent. /1

I got a reply saying, "We checked with the local council and that's where the right of way is on the Definitive Map so we regard this as closed" and lads, your job is accurate mapping, not just reprinting information from other sources.

That would be the rules of a definitive right of way, the right of way hasn't moved and the presence of a path is no guarantee of passage. The council or local authority can move it, the OS reports where it legally is.

The footpath hasn't moved. The OS can't move a footpath. Putting up an alternate line on the ground doesn't move the definitive right of way. Your annoyance is due to misunderstanding what they do, what a right of way is etc you need to speak to your local RoW Officer and they can look into the case
