This is I think a bit of a retcon. Elon bought it because he wanted to control it but also because he thought he could make it profitable with his brilliant ideas. He tried to back out when he realized how hard that would be, but he really did think he could do it.
He was not the sole investor. Saudis, Jared & likely others.
He was the distraction. B/c of his wealth, journalists did not really look into who or why others invested in this bad financial investment.
And when Elon started destroying it, nobody seriously questioned him.
They destroyed the one
place where regular ppl could communicate directly & easily w/ ppl from elsewhere in the world so that we could help each other & where the powerful could be held to account.
A person could contact a journalist or find legal help or financial help very easily.
It leveled the playing field.
He had other investors pitch in. But yes, it was a purchase to engage in social engineering, not profit. Just another tool to control the narrative and get their choice for President across the finish line.
He bought Twitter to control the narrative, and now we're all seeing the results - algorithmic manipulation to boost his views, push notifications of his posts even to non-followers, and platform-wide changes to amplify whatever he believes at the moment.
