My father thought he was a history expert. He believed everything he learned from public school text books in the late 40s / early 50s. Didn't matter what you showed him, those textbooks was the only truth he would accept.
What they've been "taught" is a lot less of a problem than what they have taught themselves in order to lend support and justification for their mental defects.
When did you last study school curricula? It's taught in English classes, History classes and Science classes. EVERY CLASS which includes a research project (Term paper) touches on thinking and analysis of sources so it's taught repeatedly in elementary, middle and secondary schools.
Based on how popular and widespread conspiracy theories are ('magical thinking'), and how much support the Buffoon has, I'd say critical thinking isn't being taught nearly enough. By teachers to their students, or by parents to their kids.
When you're indoctrinated to believe in "magical thinking" about a cruel or benevolent SKY GOD 24/7 reinforcement for the first five years, 18/180 of reinforcement for next 12 years as you grow older anyone expecting schooling of only 7.5 hrs 5 days a week for 180 days to compete is illogical.
Hey there. I’m older and from NY but I remember learning critical thinking and source siting when I was in high school. Not all states have that benefit, but I remember learning it.
Great point. I am also older but never had a class like that in any public school. I have to wonder if there's a critical thinking class still taught in your old high school nowadays.
Also, to be clear this is when the twin towers fell in New York, and there was a lot of misinformation flying around. I’m lucky to have had such great teachers.
Ña, there really some very uneducated folks out there. And they rely on their church or their family to help them out. People don’t read, don’t know how to read, don’t want to think about anything unpleasant. Sure recent graduates did get a shitty education, that’s you under 40 group, blame Red.
Nope, there's a big chunk of Americans who are dumber than a pile of day-old dog shit. Can't think for themselves. Couldn't find their own ass with both hands and a map. I could go on, but I know I don't need to.
That happens when you decide to ignore actual facts. He’s eternally questioning things that are already settled science. That also makes it impossible to really argue with the guy cause facts and science doesn’t do anything for them. Just more stuff for them to question..
No science is ever settled. We do not know what we don't know. He is quite well-versed on topics that I suspect you could not explain in detail as he can.
We make computers and technology that works. That confirms what we know. If we didn’t understand it, how would we utilize the science?
You place doubt at thermodynamics and electricity? Magnetism? These are settled, we won’t suddenly find out that magnets attract each other cause they’re horny.
Furthermore, I am way, WAY smarter than RFK, and so are you. The dude had a brain worm cause he eats road kill. Guess what? Eating rancid meat = bad. That’s pretty much settled science. RFK disagrees.
USA Joins Axis of Evil: In the U.N. General Assembly, the U.S. joined Russia, Iran and North Korea in voting against a Europe-backed Ukrainian resolution that calls out Moscow’s aggression and demands an immediate withdrawal of Russian troops. GREAT WORK RIGHTY! trump did that
I disagree. The problem we now have is that people question what they're taught BEFORE they've truly understood it. The truth has become subject to people's personal politics.
The problem is that people have been taught to keep asking the same question as long as the answer is one they don’t like. Antivaxxers talking points have not evolved since 1760. Wellness industry thrives on people staying paranoid about pharmaceuticals, which kills valid criticism in the process.
I think it has a lot to do with the dismantling of the fairness doctrine. It told tv stations that if they didn’t just give unlearning facts they could be shut down. You have to work hard in the US to find factual information. These people go to Fox News and expect news.
Not sure what you are suggesting. Existing knowledge is necessary to integrate new experiences. More time in formal education? Actually reading a few challenging books on your own?
Curiosity and critical thinking means you will interrogate your ideas and preconceptions. It’s the difference between knowing about history and actually understanding it.
“‘Everybody’s happy now.’ ‘Yes, everybody’s happy now,’ echoed Lenina. They had heard the words repeated a hundred and fifty times every night for twelve years.”
IMO: Part of the equation is also HOW they are taught. We don't teach kids how to figure things out for themselves. (critical thinking). Ever since Reagan, teachers teach "to the test."
Their only goal is to get kids to pass certain tests. Not figure it out for themselves.
I don’t think this is correct. I have found that the poorly educated ARE questioning everything but they are now consuming propaganda because they aren’t educated enough to ask appropriate questions
20 years of NCLB in US public schools awarding 'participation certificates" for "not participating" has created a subculture of Dunning-Kruger Adults who are SUPREMELY CONFIDENT in their ignorance. Shouldn't surprise anyone really.
Also they believe they are the cleverest people in the room and that they are thinking for themselves and yet they repeat word for word propaganda. Blows my mind every time. Never get used to it. 🤷🏾♂️
It’s the firehose of lies, we expect these people to sort through the lies and find the truth? They need help. The free press was the sorter but no more.
As much as I want to agree with this, statistics show that the average American can only read at or under a 6th grade level. Education is undervalued in this country and even demonized.
Too many of our republican states seem to have a very poor education system. They keep voting red and the Republicans keep them suppressed because they are easier prey when they are dumbed down. Very sad....
And when they do question they question basic science instead of politics, ethics, and religion. they just swap one set of leaders for another, without realizing both times they picked con artists.
I believe some folks think there education stops whenever the schooling ends. We need to be learning our entire lives not settling on things learned in the past.
Education does not finish at age 12 or age 14, as it was for my grandfather in 1918, but at least 16 or 18 when they have learnt how to use the knowledge they got in earlier years. Such as critical thinking, justice, civics and history.

My 3rd grade gifted class teacher taught us that the stuff we are learning in school is the simplified stuff for kids and that it gets way more complicated if you want specifics. My high-functioning aspergers brain needed that
I think focusing on education and people's intelligence is a weakness in our political discourse. It looks down on people who don't agree with us. We need more people to feel included, not more people who feel judged.
If this read as Knowledge and not “education” than I’d agree wholeheartedly. I have a degree and I am not smarter than my younger brother. Don’t tell him.
There’s more ways to be educated than college. It can be argued that college does more harm than good. Knowledge is different. You can easily pick up more bad things than good.
Populations should be educated enough to develop critical thinking skills. Public education should be well funded and the study of history should be mandatory. Those who do not study history are doomed to repeat it!
When they don’t know how their government works, or the constitution and its protections, what they’ll lose. You’ve had bad politicians elected, and keep voting along party lines, and they didn’t serve you well. So you said screw it and voted to suicide your own country.
No, I think the problem is greed.
The problem is society and capitalism.
Excessive capitalism has STOPPED human curiosity and increased consumption and poor science.
Why?
"I WANT TO BE RICH!"
But look what capitalism has caused - more consumption, more climate change, more disease, more poverty

People know better.
They know what the consequences of their philosophy will be for others.
They simply find the illusion of power in cruelty too intoxicating
