I always kept a hair dryer near for those. Heat up both, and then I was usually able to connect them without too much trouble.

I literally just figured this out this summer after much thought of creating a warm box. I fire it up and come back after some time. All the parts are way softer and much easier to build. I been doing a lot of crazy builds finally.
