Creating the guardians has gotten a lot faster since I tried it last time. Charm and the related tools have gotten so much more powerful. The armor pieces and materials used to take me probably 5x longer.

The raw render with volumes looked closer to this. I'd probably try more effects in Blender, but the resource usage and render time explodes when combining the map, volume scatters and all those guardians. Or perhaps I could also render at sensible resolutions.
So I decided to export the render as EXR together with the mist pass and do the fog and some other stuff in PS. PS didn't like 32-bit images at 16k (or rather I didn't want to endure waiting forever), so I settled on 8k. Did the final color adjustments in darktable, because I much prefer filmic.
