We are a family of egg eaters. 2 very muscular teen boy athletes/weight lifters live in our house and it’s something they can make on their own quickly. I’m happy to be able to afford them bc I know many cannot.
I was trying to figure out our obsession with eggs? Maybe I didn't realize how many Americans ate them, loved them, craved them, and was willing to destroy the country for the price of them, who knew?
We have breakfast for dinner, every couple months . Sometimes use two for scrambled egg sandwich for lunch. Very rare to have them for breakfast. Once a week, I use 2-3 for baking.
It was a staple for my weight management/loss. They’re a high protein, low fat/sugar food so we can litany eat as many as we want… so i are a TON on eggs in a variety of forms. Same with chicken. Both are now problematic due to bird flu and I’m trying to
They claim all fish is frozen at sea, you might as well buy it frozen; it’s cheaper and it’s the same, but it isn’t the same. I cook a lot of fish, and “fresh” fish comes out better.
The only fish I’ll eat is fish that is literally pulled out of the water in front me and cooked up that same day. Now THAT is good. But anything older than that develops that “fishy” taste that i don’t like
To me there’s fishy and then there’s fishy. One is spoiled and that goes in the compost, but the other is fish-like. I want a fish to taste like fish. Tuna, sardines. Very fishy, but good.
Best best for frozen is your air fryer. You can toss the protein in and it comes out perfectly, Rachel. I didn’t believe it until my daughter prepared salmon filets that way. She just put a little pesto on top, it was perfectly cooked. Plan for that Sweets.
We eat trout once a week. Being in CO that is the only fresh fish one can find. Everything else is frozen. If we do buy anything frozen it does not come from fish farms or the The Gulf of Mexico. It comes out of the The Seattle Fish Market. Fish and shellfish is unreasonably priced.
My cholesterol is just fine and was much better after i lost the weight. There are some conflicting studies regarding how much eggs really contribute to cholesterol levels/heart issues. What i know is my heart health improved immensely.
Yes, eggs can be harmful when combined with a sugary or high carb diet. When those problematic issues are removed, eggs are a nutrition powerhouse that complements the human body.
WHAT OTHER RECOURSE DO WE HAVE NOW OTHER THAN A JUNTA GOVT TO JAIL TRUMP AND HIS CABINET OF TRAITORS? WHAT OTHER CHOICE DO WE HAVE? IN THIS CASE A WRONG WILL MAKE A RIGHT. HISTORY WILL FORGIVE US FOR THIS, BUT AT THIS POINT IT IS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY IN ORDER TO TAKE BACK OUR GOVT FROM FASCISTS!!!!!
Eggs used to be a cheap source of protein and lipids that the poor could count on to get through financial hardship periods. This is not the case anymore. Eggs kept people from starving and being food insecure.
They might want to eat something other than beans once in a while... I promise, if you're subsisting off of cheap protein, you're eating a lot of beans
I eat a ton of beans and I attest to getting tired of them sometimes. Adding an animal protein to beans prevents burnout for me, even if it's minimal like tinned fish or a fried egg.
Exactly. Beans are far more filling than eggs too.
One egg: 6g protein. Half cup black beans: 8g protein (highest of the most commonly found, especially in food banks).
Not offended at all. I do get a little touchy about the whole egg thing because Democrats looking for the easy answer bring this shit up a lot. It wasn't just egg prices that turned voters away, it was everything all at once. Saying it was eggs means they don't really have any idea how to reach ppl.
But her emails? I don’t know, nothing makes sense anymore. The national food is now omelettes or something. “Eggs” is one of the national key words right now, as is “trans” and “DEI.”
I haven’t bought any for awhile but there was a time I could go through 2 dozen a week all by myself easy — one dozen for breakfasts and the other to hard boil for snacks. Get a partner and a couple kids with similar habits… I thought it was weird at first too until I did the math.
They *were* an affordable source of protein and of course necessary for those of us who make our own bread because our guts don’t like something in commercial bread. Guess now us peasants have to just go back to our beans and lentils.
Exactly, even if you made a dozen eggs for breakfast or dinner it’s still likely cheaper or close to what you’d pay for any lb of meat.Sure they are more expensive than they used to be but it can’t be breaking anyone’s grocery budget. Two eggs go a long way.
My neighbor in the 70’s & 80’s had chickens. In the city. I loved hearing them & they were certainly happy. It was against city code but no one turned her in.
We had large yards & her chickens had a lovely, home! She chose a partially treed corner area for them.
Love it! We are more rural. No code. We rebuilt the old existing coop/run & added a chicken tractor. Then added to the run twice... chicken math is a real thing... lol
We were in Charlotte, NC. City. Now most homes over $1M, but not then. Those chickens were wonderful! Neighbor was an elementary teacher & ended up with the ‘class project’. That’s how it started. It grew & she made sure her chicks were well cared for & loved.
In the last place we lived there was a neighbor somewhere who had free roaming chickens. We lived in a very suburban area so they were pretty out of place. One in particular just kinda showed up in our front yard and chilled there every once in a while. I called her Red. If we came outside she’d
Just kinda follow at our heals as we did whatever we were doing. And the you go inside and she goes back to hanging out and eventually goes home. Happened a couple times. Made my cat a little crazy. I told her she wouldn’t know what to do with a chicken. It’s bigger than her and would fuck her up 😂
OMG! When I was a kid both sets grandparents raised chickens. One had a Rhode Island Red- bro & I named Mary. Grandma's name. We carried the hen around outside & in the house. Grandma was not impressed when we plopped her on the table... I don't have a Rhode Island chicken here. Maybe next time!
I'm just amazed you put up the price of a healthy lunch item by 40 cents and the entire country implodes. (That's equivalent to about 2 bullets a week, for the grocery-item dysfunctional.)
I know? How many eggs do you eat to justify voting for the end of American democracy, concentration camps for Hispanics, the dismantling of almost every program that helps Americans, the end of the Dept. of Education, shutting down Medicare and Social Security all to… still pay more for eggs?
I don't understand it, unless they have really large families or consume a whole lot of eggs, why people need to purchase several dozen at a time.
If everyone stopped trying to hoard them, there'd be enough to go around.
tRump controlled the media, it's what he's always done. It was never about the price of eggs, that's why there's no outrage now, that eggs and everything else has gone up.
I want these programs back immediately. It's not just them. Those are our programs and they stay none of our programs go. We'll start our own then right next to him and keep the money.
I was in the habit of making a frittata once a week. I used whatever vegetables needed to be used, and a little Parmesan cheese. It’s as expensive as salmon nowadays.
During this egg dilemma our vegan family has not been phased by it. I continue to feel sad for the millions of birds that suffer, and those who've been destroyed due to bird flu. Humans don't need eggs. Cooking and baking is easy without them. People are just stubborn and selfish.
Humans are disgusting. In so many ways they deserve what they get…except for the vegans among us who will unfortunately suffer the safe fate as the carnists. 😢
Fewer potluck? Fewer celebrations that require cake? Fewer fundraisers selling breakfast burritos for the wrestling team? That's just my experience. Do come live away from the restaurants and you'll know.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned..it’s that back in 2020 when Trump couldn’t keep food on the shelves, we were smart to buy chickens. It’s really paying off.
I've learned one thing in the past couple of months is that eggs were not in a center to vote in what we have now my family hasn't eaten eggs in almost a year
Yay! Tofu, tempeh and chia seeds can do the job. Time to be more creative. So many ways to with eggs. And as an aside, other than the poor in this country, imagine if we cut our discrationary spending 10 to 20 percent and only used credit cards for essential items, cost would come down fast.
One of the most shocking things about visiting the US is just how large part eggs are of American breakfasts, not to talk about the complexity of having to choose how you want your eggs from a large, but unknown set of options.
I discovered some years ago, I am allergic to eggs. I had anaphylaxis after eating eggs and pancakes as a pancake house. Then I started reacting to eggs.
I was not allergy to eggs for roughly 50 years since I was born. But I had had anaphylaxis due to severe grass pollen allergies.
I have a home bakery, but even if I didn’t count the eggs I use for my business, we’d still go through at least a dozen a week. My husband has eggs every single day. I’m glad we have our own chickens.
I'm surprised as well -- I'm definitely on the low side of consumption. My problem is I buy a half-dozen and have to eventually boil them to avoid having them around way past the "best by" date.
Me too. If you can check on YouTube, buying pickling lime, a big glass jar and follow instructions on how to keep eggs for years, it keeps them without having to cook them.
On days when the husband is in the office and my handler is unable to prepare food hard boiled eggs are extremely useful things - left peeled they are easy to eat and serve and need no reheating .
It’s a good thing I’m not a big egg eater. I use them to bake though. Yesterday I went to Costco and they only had packages of five dozen. 60 eggs! There’s no way I would ever need or be able to use all those before they needed to go in the compost pile. 🥚😷
Here’s the rub, eggs are up because of a virus and there’s not much any President could do, kinda like Covid. Who would have thought that supply chain shocks can lead to higher prices.
My son in Indiana has backyard chickens, and duck and roosters, he sends me pictures of eggs He doesn’t even know what to do with it anymore. He has so many, I told him to start handing them out to his neighbors as gifts.
Don't let them come in contact with wild birds? It's not real hard. Our coop and run are encased in half-inch hardware cloth, but awesome inside. It's like a combo of Alcatraz and Shangri-La.
It’s not like millions of chickens got h5n1 and died. A few chickens out of a million bird (seriously American industrial poultry farms are insanely large) flock get ill and they cull the rest. USDA does not reimburse for birds that die of h5n1. They reimburse for culled birds.
My husband and I are on a fixed income. Eggs are a main source of our meals. Two people and I buy the 60 count. Surprised? Breakfast, breakfast for dinner, baking from scratch. They are easy and fast to prepare and you can add vegetables. Without eggs we won't make it through the month.
Same.eggs are incredibly healthy food. The two of us go through around 5 dozen every 2 weeks. We cook and bake our own food and eggs are great all day long. We've got a farmer who has kept the price down for us since we buy so many from her. We eat meat as a splurge, but it's beans and eggs for us.
We go through several dozen a week. I make everything at home from scratch...pastas, breads, everything. We're not technically on a fixed income but switching over to processed and pre packed foods is a no go for us
I had a dear friend who kept finding eggs for .99/doz or less over the years. Sometimes 2 dozen for .99. He’d give me eggs. I’d ask him not to. (I haven’t eaten eggs much for several decades. Per dr). I checked a carton recently. Expired in 2021. It was pitched. I do a lot of veggies.
I certainly do.
Egg over rice and black beans.
Hardboiled as a ramen topping.
Egg salad and crackers.
Omelette sandwich.
Egg whites in grits.
All hail the egg <3
Being plant based and eating no eggs. With how things are going, people should explore what can be done with beans lentils now before it's their only choice
In the US, women control between $5 to $15 trillion in consumer spending annually. Women control more than 60% of personal wealth! Women purchase over 50% of traditional male products, like automobiles, home improvement products, and electronics
Let's use our power! Don't buy anything on Wednesdays
Yeah, I like eggs, too. I used to eat a dozen every 10 days or so. I've found I can comfortably live without them, and if I get a hankering for a quiche, I'll buy them. 🤷♀️
Husband (a veteran) reminisced about all the powdered eggs he ate in the service, said we should stock up.
Me: There's been 3 full cartons in the fridge the last two weeks, untouched.
I'm just glad it's not toilet paper all over again.....
As we get older our bodies become less able to process protein, not because we need less, though. Eggs are very nutrient dense, not just proteiny, so even at the current high price it is still a good option.
Some of us kinda do. Gastric upset, low fodmap and weight loss nutritional diets are going to eat more direct eggs than average. The weight loss diet that truly works for me is if I have an egg or 3 ounce of fish every single breakfast. Literally adding specific breakfast caused weight loss.
Those are individual cases. I am on a diet also, just not on eggs. If that works for you is great!!! But not everyone is on a diet… but everyone complains about the eggs……
Yes. I may eat some in baked goods that I don’t make.
I’ve never in this one paid high prices for eggs. I use a farm delivery service in the DC area, HungryHarvest, and their eggs are very reasonable w no spikes in the last four years. Of course I don’t eat many either.
My husband had mouth cancer 20 yrs ago and has difficulty eating. Surgery and radiation did a number on his ability to swallow. Eggs are a staple of his diet for protein since they are soft and easy to swallow. At least 4 a day. It's definitely getting expensive for us.
Fine, I'll be the one to point it out. If you're struggling financially, eggs used to be a cheap source of protein. People need to remember that not everyone shares the same life experience. Even at current prices, a lot of people do not care but for those who are barely getting by, it's a big deal.
Also a lot of people live in food deserts, so they don't have access to a lot of options. Eggs are usually pretty easy to find, even if you live in an area with limited options.
Our housekeeper has her own chickens and brings us free fresh eggs each week, we hard boil them for our Goldens 🐾 I’m more concerned with people losing their jobs than the price of eggs and MAGA once again got played
They’re a high protein/low fat food—great for weight loss programs. Im single and i go thru them like crazy. 2 for breakfast every morning, I’ll eat hard boiled or deviled for a snack, fix fried egg sandwiches on low carb bread, use them to make French toast etc etc.
It’s my quick backup plan when I don’t have the stuff or the time to make a whole well-planned dinner, i.e., a big salad w/ lots of chopped components.
Okay listen, we go through eggs like mad in my house. I eat 3-4 a day, I feed them to my dogs, my husband eats a few most days too. Add in my joy of baking and we easily go through 60 a week.
Hard boiled eggs. Scrambled. Omelets. Frittata. Quiche. Baking cookies and cakes. Why on earth would you come out being so judgmental about what people eat? It’s literally not your business.
I'm a little absent-minded, so I often buy things we don't need forgetting I just bought them a week ago. We have three dozen eggs in the fridge right now and it will take forever to eat them all.
Hi, It's me! I buy 30 eggs a week, sometimes more. I have 4 teenagers, a 300-lb husband with a very physical job, and I make a lot of things from scratch. It's shocking how quickly you can disappear a dozen eggs in my house.
Absolutely! I buy 5 dozen eggs every 2 weeks and have 5 kids and a husband. I also make most stuff from scratch. If the oldest 5 of us have 2 eggs for breakfast and the little 2 one a piece that’s a dozen gone in one meal.
I remember those days…10 gallons of milk and 5 dozen eggs every week. I made everything from scratch when I was home with our 4 girls. Trust me, girls can inhale just as much food as the boys!
Just me and the wife; but typically between the two of us, 4/day for breakfast. Figure the occasional day of something different, still easy to go through 2 dozen/week, and that's before using them for baking or other cooking.
Eating eggs? Cooking dishes with eggs in them? Baking? You find it hard to imagine what 24+ eggs can be used for?? They stay good for 3-5 weeks in the fridge. We buy the 60 pack and that doesn't always last all month.
I make scrambled eggs, poached eggs, egg drop soup, hard boiled eggs, egg salad, fritattas, and I also do a lot of baking - bread, cake, muffins/cupcakes, tarts, pies, etc... I also use eggs to make fruit curd using the loquats from a tree in my backyard.
I'm also a picky eater, and I deal with an eating disorder, so eggs are one of my go-to's. Especially in the morning, because breakfast is the meal I forget to eat, so scrambled eggs are easy on my stomach and quick to whip up.
Breakfast sandwiches or burritos, ramen, pancakes, avocado toast, great to top chili or enchiladas, baking: bread/pasta/cookies, shashuka. Eggs go quickly.
If I've learned one thing since the pandemic, everyone cares too much about what is said in the media and too little at "okay, toilet paper/eggs/butter (Norway relevant in 2011)/*insert anything here* shortage? Let's look at alternatives..."

Still cheap, but not like they used to be.
One egg: 6g protein. Half cup black beans: 8g protein (highest of the most commonly found, especially in food banks).
I know a lot of people that do this.
Dieters will still have to learn proper portion sizes eventually so it’s not a sustainable weight management tool.
We had large yards & her chickens had a lovely, home! She chose a partially treed corner area for them.

Now.
It was never about the price of eggs...rather it's all about the fact that Trump validates your prejudices and hatred...
"I'm just one of the guys, like you!" His mantra...
Simply put- he hates who you hate.
If everyone stopped trying to hoard them, there'd be enough to go around.
Big deal that eggs are expensive.
There's so much else to choose from. I don't get the hysterical reaction.
It has always been about capitalizing from bigotry.
The GOP has done that for decades. Trump just finally took off the GOP hood.
💙

I consume very few eggs.
Egg over rice and black beans.

Egg salad and crackers.
Omelette sandwich.

we can take up your slack over here

These egg prices are hitting us HARD!
I’ve never in this one paid high prices for eggs. I use a farm delivery service in the DC area, HungryHarvest, and their eggs are very reasonable w no spikes in the last four years. Of course I don’t eat many either.
It’s nuts.

But yeah eggs are kind of gross actually.
