One reason I struggle with public transport is a lot of people don’t use headphones in public. I do not care to hear multiple people playing music and scrolling TikTok with their volume on full blast all at the same time.

I don't know *why* this is a thing but I have noticed it has been so prevalent that airlines started to give people earbuds (even in economy/coach) on the domestic flights I've been on in the last year or two. I bet someone has done an interesting video essay / breakdown on this...
Where are you that people are playing music on transit without headphones? The lament here is that everyone is doing that and no one talks to each other anymore.
Don't forget people who think you participate in a phone call by holding the phone flat in front of you, and putting it on speaker.
To be fair, even when making a call the conventional way, the "earpieces" in recent phones are so non targeted that everyone else can hear them anyway...
“Could you please put your headphones in?”
“Otherwise I’ll have to sing along with what you’re playing & I promise you..
I can’t hold a tune
I don’t know the words either”
It’s an indication of the level of education (low) and narcissism (high) that an individual possesses, and also “the world revolves around me” syndrome. The fact that polite people don’t dare tell them to turn it the fuck off just amazes me - obviously you can say it more politely if you wish!
(3rd time is the charm?)
My spouse, who holds degrees higher than mine, had to be yelled at in the ER waiting room to shut his phones audio off. I can't even say it's narcissism, literally everyone else was doing it. It was herd mentality, and no amount of education can correct for it.
I was sitting in a mechanic shop one time. Serval other people around my age. All either had headphones or volume low enough to not disturb people. This boomer chick comes in and cranks up the TV *and* started watching videos on her phone full volume
This frustrates me so much! I have "able to engage" privilege and very few fucks (and live in a small enough city this works...most of the time) so I have taken to asking people to use headphones.
That is not something most folks can do though and I feel for other sensory overload folks!
I start commenting on it. Beginning with serious face expressions, then dramatic postures, and finally
you can get your own phone out and pretend to give a play by play on their convo to someone else.
"No....she just told Bill...I think she should dump him too!"
I cannot imagine. I don't live somewhere that public transport is used a lot. The thought of what you described really makes me overstimulated just thinking about it. Going to the zoo makes me happy, but I have to wear Loops and they only help a little. I feel for you.
If i regularly took public transport I'd probably buy a bunch of those cheap earbuds they hand out on airplanes sometimes, then throw them at people.
There! Now you have no excuse!
I eliminated stress by just using mine. Now I don't give a shit that others don't LOL. Great white noise selections on all sources and you can just 'coast' with a sunny but vacant facial expression.
