I personally do find drone scare abnormal and interesting, particularly if they have some motive involving the multi polar world we find ourselves in. Also this level of drone activity is not normal. Drones yes, this many, no. Otherwise there probably wouldn’t be briefings. Bases wouldn’t report it.
Again social contagion implies to me that nothing is there, if you think something is there but it’s just not interesting (especially compared to aliens) that’s fine and valid, I can see your point. It’s a much more subjective point, I think. Maybe I’m wrong, I don’t deal in absolutes here.
I don't think that there are more drones than usual right now. I've seen hundreds of videos at this point and none of them have shown unusual thrown activity. People are just reporting airplanes and stars and hobby drones as more interesting than they are.
And various government agencies are responding to this hysteria by putting out press releases and doing interviews about their normal drone detection operations. I have still seen no indication of any abnormal activity.
You are right people are reporting a lot of ordinary stuff, and the response could be just happening due to public outcry. There’s signal to noise here I believe. Is it normal for military bases to be shut down from simple drone sightings?
