Arguably distorting and harming the Gospel isn't incompatible with Christianity, however. The wheat and the tares come up together. It matters that we treat the worst forms of Christianity as Christianity for three reasons:

Christians are always doing lots of things all the time. One of them is asking what real Christianity is, often in ugly ways, but also in complex ways. It’s important to insist that Christianity in a position of power, with its boot on vulnerable necks, distorts and harms the Gospel, Christ himself.
