The entitlement of people in fb groups (specifically the Star Trek cruise) who feel like actors are paid to eat lunch with them or talk to them randomly in hallways is so yikes

I had Nichelle Nichols sign a book for me & I was so nervous that my first partner had to prod me to say "Thank you I love your work & your acting." I would just leave them alone & admire from afar. Why would anyone have this attitude jfc
That's one way of putting off actors from attending any more cruises! Honestly the entitlement of some people is beyond belief. The actors are human, they need space and respect. If they choose to mingle that's awesome but I'd never expect one to hang out with a stranger.
Right? It’s a privilege and a treat to have an interaction with a celebrity guest, not a right or entitlement. How are they any different from any other human being?
Not always. Marc Alaimo hung out drinkng with my friends and me into the wee hours of the morning at a con 24 years ago. (I embargoed all Trek questions within the first ten minutes, which likely helped.)
At a con the following year we spotted Robert O'Reilly, and JG Hertzler in the hotel bar. We didn't want to bug them, so just sent them a round of drinks. They immediately asked us to join them, and were lovely.
This is true. In both cases cited, we did not approach them. It was their choice. Part of the reason the conversations lasted as long as they did was because we acted like they were normal people and weren't fangirling.
The entitlement is ridiculous. And to have that attitude leads to less genuine and cool moments. Treat them like decent people, and you end up with better stories, like our Starbucks line encounter in Vegas!
Also, overhearing someone say that “Of all people, Kate Mulgrew’s son should be okay” after losing his home in the LA fires - just - not merely completely detached from the reality of the industry, but from basic humanity. Anyone losing their home is a tragedy.
A lot of people still believe all actors are obscenely wealthy. And they assume that someone like Kate Mulgrew has royalties from here to eternity, and her family would have no problems....EVEN THOUGH THERE WERE FIRES ALL OVER CALIFORNIA.
The convention circuit is how genre performers make money, not royalties. They’re hustling. The majority of Trek actors earn fractions of a penny per episode aired. Laughably small checks in the “hundreds” of dollars per year. Some of them earn more per convention than they did acting on the show.
I was at a con and crossing from one building to a hotel, I encountered Vaughan Armstrong walking towards me. He'd been signing, doing talks and posing for pictures for 2 days by then, so I wasn't going to bother him. I just smiled and nodded.
And he did a little dance! He literally did a short dance, smiled back and we both walked away and got on with our day. I like to think that dance was a 'i appreciate you not hassling me while I look for a toilet'
If they are like that with celebrities , I can easily imagine how cringeworthy they act towards the staff in any establishment where they require service...and in restaurants...the poor wait staff.🤦
Oh, some of the complaints about the waitstaff are also terrible and entitled. Meanwhile, all of the staff on board were friendly, kind, and perfectly acceptable.
It's the idea that these people believe they are owed something as soon as they're paying. They can only exist through criticism. In a way, they are bitter and lack basic wisdom, like spoiled brats. It's very common, but it's all the more surprising among Star Trek fans. 🙄
