This is the frontispiece of an illegal book of harpsichord music, published in 1517 without privilege. The author, Andrea Antico is poking fun of his competitor Petrucci (shown as the monkey holding the lute) who held the monopoly and the privilege of the Republic in printing music.

You did have women printers, even in that very early period. The most common way to become a female printer was to continue the shop of a husband upon his death
