I do wonder if it could be argued legally that this sudden about face constitutes a chance of circumstances and members should be able to request refunds. I fear it is the only way issues will be redressed in by leaning on the pockets of the societies

Thank you very much. Those of us who are not microbiologists or members of the ASM appreciate your efforts to safeguard the independence of that society. You know better than anyone that science that is not independent, free, and honest with reality—regardless of ideologies—cannot be good science.

The way this has been done is very bad, and still no clarity why and what they are doing. It certainly is throwing DEI microbiologists under the bus.

And no apologies whatsoever. Not even acknowledging they got it completely wrong and sending out really bad signals.

It looks like they changed some wordings, the content is still there. I think that like every institution receiving federal funding (including Universities) they may have just tweaked the language in view of the EO.
