It was mediocre at best. Puzzle fatigue and didn't retain or expand on the art direction in any meaningful way. People acted like it was amazing because it wasn't literally unplayable. Not pleased abt this news.

Just get them to run on newer hardware and OS, maybe some quality of life and they are more than fine

The issue was when they tried to remaster the originals, it backfired on them. The first game got a re-imagining, but it had a mixed reception. They could bring out better remasters, but Silent Hill never pulled in Metal Gear numbers. Castlevania got collections, but those are easier to emulate.

Also if you'll notice, Konami are pretty much following Capcom's redemption arc. And Capcom only brought back their PS1 originals to consoles and GOG recently. Silent Hill 4 came to GOG, and the other 3 games are some of the most requested on their Dream List... so there is hope.

I'm very lucky to own a physical copy of Silent Hill 2 on PC, and that we have the folks who did the Silent Hill 2: Enhanced Edition, because that was not a game that has aged badly at all or was in need of significant gameplay improvements. It's a masterpiece.

I'll always recommend the original because while i respect the remake i just don't think Silent Hill 2 should ever have 10 hours of combat focused padding on what was a very lean well-paced game.

I genuinely don't really get why people like the remake so much, except that it's not nearly as bad as their track record would imply it should be. It's still a mid action horror game and all their additions and changes to the writing are just as awful as everything else they've ever written.

also it was one of the most motion sickness-inducing games I've ever played, they put in some kind of default Unreal Engine camera and did nothing to design around it except make it cut forward if something gets in front of it, which in indoor places meant it was frequently juddering and strobing.

Apparently Konami doesn't have the rights to the voice performances in the originals (which is why in SH3 PC there are no flashback voices in one section) and they do not wanna pay for them again
