Thank you. My exact response when saw the xray, and felt physically ill. My heart hurts for how much it must hurt when the break occurred and since. We suspect occurred at his last recheck.
Let’s see what everything entails. We go back mid-Jan for repeat X-rays. ❤️

Are bone stimulators used on dogs? I don't see why it couldn't be. I had an ulnar osteotomy about 15 years ago and it wasn't healing so the ortho prescribed that for me. (Disclaimer: it didn't work for me, but apparently does for many).

Not aware if used on dogs, and not a bad idea. I’ll ask at next appt in Jan. I used one when fractured my humerus, it didn’t work for me either, and unfortunately disposed of after hanging onto for years. Thanks! Smart thinking.

A rare but preventable complication. Thunder is back on full restrictions. The tibia needs to heal and the fibula is a non-weight bearing bone, which may need to be addressed later. This surgeon agreed to take on his care, as initially wanted to send immediately back to where completed. No idea 2/

why the bone has not fully healed, maybe GI issues, but worsening lameness should’ve been further investigated. Contacted head of the ortho dept at university where completed. Wishes for healing appreciated. Heartbroken as can’t imagine the pain Thunder’s experiencing.

Thank you. Agree. Started crying when saw xray. The bone from the surgery needs to fully heal as a weight bearing bone. The fibula is not a weight bearing bone, but personally concerned as break displaced. Full restrictions and recheck tibia healing mid-Jan and discuss next steps.

He’s been sleeping since got home. He’s not bad, but definitely see lack of exercise impacts him. Especially since lifted restrictions and now have to start going outside on leash every time in the winter. He’ll be disappointed can’t sleep in bed again.

Hi. Yes, that’s the fibula. She said it’s not a weight bearing bone and broke due to the tibia not being fully healed and instability as a result when restrictions lifted. My understanding is the tibia needs to heal first. Difficult to imagine will heal on its own

I’m so glad you pushed to see someone else. Just maddening. So Thunder had a 12 week recheck and that’s when you first there was an issue. What we are you on now? I don’t know how you are doing this? Another person I know got her dog a fentanyl patch, to help her TPLO recovery dog sleep.

Oh my goodness. That’s scary. They did xrays at 8 weeks and extended restrictions by 4 more weeks as healing but not fully healed. Guessing assumed would be fully healed at 12 wks and didn’t repeat. Said should have repeated to be certain as wasn’t as still not fully healed now.

Push him without doing recheck xrays first? You know I’m not one to point the finger at vets when things go wrong (bc 99% of the time it’s not their fault) but this is different. This is bad.

Yep. Also recommended hardware explant but first, push him and continue rehab, as Jan surgery schedule not available until mid-Dec. Surgeon today said hardware doesn’t appear to be painful. If X-rays had been repeated at 12 weeks, would’ve seen tibia not fully healed.

If he doesn’t already have one might be worth an internal med consult (or internal med 2nd opinion) to take another look at Thunder’s med regimen. Some GI meds can affect nutrient absorption which then affects how well the body can heal & repair itself. Vet nutritionist’s input might be helpful too.
