Is America an oligarchy? Even a system that calls itself a democracy can become an oligarchy if power becomes concentrated in the hands of a few very wealthy people and corporations.

The reason this has gone on for so long is global awareness to this level being a relatively new invention. You can get away with a lot when you aren't being watched by this many people.
I believe our government will quickly move to being an oligarchy because of Trump and the ilk of people he’s selecting for his cabinet and his tendency for quid pro quo activities to support his grifting the system
