have messaged yarn seller, fully expecting some sob story (either real or fake) designed to make me feel bad about asking.

Lots of people in the small-business of craft supplies are kind of flaky and bonkers and will do wild stuff like take your money and then shame you for wanting your product

Like a knitting friend reminded me: there are at least two cases of "faked deaths to get out of fulfilling orders" in the yarn dying world.

I did tell them that if they can't ship it within a couple weeks I want a refund

maybe I just go through places like Simply Socks from now on,

Omg.. there was a time on ravelery back in the day when it seemed like "hip indie yarn dyer faked their own death" was almost a monthly occurrence.
