"Unleash Commercial Nuclear Power in the United States" and that section is about developing new reactor designs for export to the rest of the world. Not surprising really, the regulatory agency for commercial reactors in the US (the NRC) isn't part of DOE.

Nearly all existing nuclear (electrical) power generation in the US is commercial, the only reactors I can think of off the top of my head that aren't are on U.S. Navy ships or arguably those owned by the Tennessee Valley Authority.

Yeah that’s why I thought it was a weird callout. Except that he likes to use support of nuclear as proof that he’s not a climate denier, not solely pushing gas, etc. But then I was thinking it might be a reference to SMRs since I know he’s been pretty hype about that tech for a while

Right, what got me was his use of “commercial nuclear” rather than the more commonly understood “nuclear power” if that’s indeed what he meant. Seems very deliberate, I could be reading too much into it but it still throws up a little red flag.

Meanwhile, the obstacle to more nuclear is definitely the private sector. The public sector can certainly license. The private sector keeps forgetting the part where you actually build.
