My book is called ‘MANDALAY: Recipes & Tales from a Burmese Kitchen’ because Mandalay is where my heart lies.
My father and my brothers were all born in Mandalay, and my parents met at Mandalay Medical School.
My tastes, my food, my vocabulary are that of a Mandalay-thu (မန္တလေးသူ - ‘Mandalayan’).

Everyone was familiar with this imposing building on the corner of 82nd & 34th Streets with the Caduceus symbol at the top signifying that it housed my aunt’s GP surgery, but to me it was just home.
The epicentre was Mandalay.
We spent the worst day ever trying to locate all of our family there.
Thankfully, they are now accounted for and currently safe, but many, many others have not been so lucky.
The survivors will need all the help they can get, *especially* as the military dictatorship in Myanmar is merciless - continuing its campaign of airstrikes and deliberately targeting civilians.
They will ensure that your funds will not go straight to the military dictatorship.

The roof and the upstairs walls cracked and collapsed in the earthquake. The Caduceus is gone.
It hurts my heart to see this symbol of my childhood reduced to rubble like this, but at least my family are alive.
