I rarely post images without Alt text but this was meant as a quick reply and I was lazy, sorry.
If you're asking why barn owls are the only surviving member of their Genus, they aren't. They have a cousin called bay owls, phodilus.
Bottom pic: how I actually look
The first one sounds like Rene Auberjonois.
The branch leading to barn owls has a heart shaped facial disk unlike the round version of true owls. They also lack tufts.
So while different, they are still owls.
