The Sex Institute was open between 1919 and 1933 and primarily researched homosexuality, intersex people, trans healthcare, but also provided gynecological care, treatment for STIs and helped people with alcoholism

The institute was headed up by Magnus Hirschfeld, a gay Jewish man, who also spent time with advocacy for gay rights. He performed speeches at schools and universities which prompted the Nazi propaganda arm to claim "he's making your kids gay"

At the time of the attack, Hirschfeld was away on a tour and he lived out the remainder of his life in France, continuing his studies as well as publishing a book on racism

For a long time it was believed that Dora Richter, who worked at the sex institute, also believed to be the first trans woman to receive bottom surgery had been killed in the attacks, however new evidence seems to suggest that she did survive and lived out her days in modern Czechia

Dora actually only lived in Czechoslovakia until 1946, when after the war on May 1st, she was expelled along with other Germans back to Germany. She lived there into her 70s.

After the attacks, Hitler announced stricter laws around homosexuality and began the rounding up of gay men into concentration camps. This also likely included bisexual men and trans women as no differentiation was seen by the Nazi government
